Legalized marijuana emerged as a key campaign battleground for Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Democratic challenger Cynthia Nixon recently in the wake of newly reported arrest data that spotlighted the issue.
Cuomo and Nixon have sparred over whether New York should join states like New Jersey and Massachusetts in pushing plans to allow pot for recreational use.
The debate comes after The Journal News/lohud reported there have been 887,000 marijuana-related arrests in New York between 2000 and 2017.
Want to find out how many marijuana arrests happened in your neighborhood?
Want to see when felony drug busts found large quantities of pot being sold in your community?
Here are some tips to search the lohud database for marijuana arrests statewide during the past 18 years:
Search by county. Use the ‘Select County’ tool to narrow down the data by picking one of 62 counties. Sort from largest to smallest. Use the ‘arrows’ to sort data from most arrests to least. That should help find if your community is among the highest for pot arrests in New York. Search by keywords. Use the ‘Text Search’ tool to dig into each county. This will help find out if your police department is making a lot of pot busts.
